September 2022 meeting
Our September meeting was small but we still had a lot of fun and a lot of games.
I started off with my first-ever game of Root, alongside 7 Wonders: Armada, and Doughnut Drive-Thru.
Root was as much fun as I was expecting. I was playing the Cats and got so, so close to getting the win by controlling a few bits of territory. However, the wandering Vagabond, the most asymmetric of the asymmetric factions, sneaked a win at the last possible moment to deny my destiny!
This is definitely a game that requires a few plays to uncover all that's going on with it. The asymmetry of the factions means you need to spend a few games to understand how each faction wins, as well as understand how each faction loses. This is a game where it's not enough to play your own part well: you also need to prevent your opponents getting ahead.
The afternoon saw more games: Empires: Age of Discovery (the rebranded Age of Empires), Terraforming Mars, and Clank.
Empires: Age of Discovery remains a mechanically great worker-placement and area-control game, but I'm now a bit more sensitive to the context of the real-world events that the game depicts: the European colonisation of the Americas had a lot of awful things happen, and we're still dealing with the consequences of them now.
The final game was Annihilageddon, which looked to be everything the cover art promised.
October meeting
Our October meeting on on 8 October, as listed on the calendar. Note that the dates for 2023 are now on the calendar.
