August 2023 Meeting
August is sometimes a quiet month for the club - but not so this time - as well as regulars, it was good to see some new faces, and others who hadn't been for a long time.
A couple of "big" games were played - one very big! Twilight Imperium took up most of the day for one group, not to mention lots of table space, but they came well prepared with extra kit to make the game board easily accessible. The object is to conquer the galaxy, and each game can be very different, with each faction involved having different abilities and the game board is made up of hexes which are set out differently each time.
Ark Nova has been played at the club a number of times. Players use game cards to perform various actions, the aim being to plan, design and build the best scientifically managed modern zoo.

A bunch of old favourites were also played.
Tzolk'in is based on the complex Mayan calendars. The game board holds giant interconnected gears on which workers are placed, their position determining their action - then when one gear is turned it affects all the others.
Isle of Skye is a tile laying game with similarities to Carcassonne, but enough differences, such as bidding for tiles.
Ra is a bidding game with an ancient egyptian theme. Over three epochs (rounds), players try to build monuments, influence pharaohs, pay homage to gods, advance technology, etc , while hoping to avoid disasters, before the sun god Ra puts in an appearance.

Welcome to the Moon is a variation on the "Welcome To" series of games, but instead of building houses to create a community, players populate space ships to get to the moon.
The ever popular 6 Nimmt was played twice, and Poison put in an appearance too.

Die of the Dead, the pretty game based on the Mexican Day of the Dead, was also played, but not photographed.
Our next meeting will be on Saturday 9 September. See you there!
