March 2023 meeting

Welcome to our new members.

We are always happy to see new people, and this month we had two.  More than a dozen games were played - some of them more than once.

There were two longer games - Dune Imperium continues to be very popular, and Scythe put in a reappearance.  The latter has interesting themes including,   apparently, "Dieselpunk".  According to Wikipedia, "Dieselpunk  is a retrofuturistic subgenre of science fiction similar to steampunk or cyberpunk, that combines the aesthetics of the diesel-based technology of the interwar period through to the 1950s with retro-futuristic technology and postmodern sensibilities." (In case you were interested).

There was a first outing at the club for Damask.  This is another very enjoyable and pretty game from the people who produced Die of the Dead.  Essentially, it is about gathering silks to complete designs and make money, to win the game.  I'm not sure if I have seen Village Green before.  It is a game of "pretty gardens and petty grudges" - sounds very true to life!

I finally got to play Innovation , which is more complicated than 6 Nimmt (also played), but has the same element of "just when you think you know what you're doing, something comes along to mess up any plan you thought you might have had".

Turing Machine was back (find the secret code by asking the right questions). As was The King is Dead - last time I played this I was joint winner, which was as much a surprise to me as it was to the other players.

Isle of Skye is a tile laying game with similarities to Carcassonne, plus added elements (including whisky).  Deep Sea Adventure is a fun little game about diving for treasure and trying to get it back to the submarine before the oxygen runs out.

Quacks of Quedlinburg involves adding ingredients to your potion before it explodes.  Still on the potion theme, was Potion Explosion, one of my favourite games - it's got marbles, so what's not to like?  I was enjoying myself so much that I forgot to take photos.

Colt Express is always popular, with it's super little 3D train, on which bandits  chase each other around to try to grab the loot and avoid the Marshal.  Players programme their  moves using cards from their hand, while trying to second guess everyone else. Then the shooting starts.  This is a must for Western fans!

Next meeting

NB  Our next meeting will be on 1 April - the first Saturday of the month rather than the second, so we don't clash with Easter weekend.
